Website or Facebook page? What a small business really needs

A Facebook page is a great start, but it is not really yours. How to tell when a website is worth it, and how the two work best together.

Many businesses in Bangladesh start on Facebook, and for good reason: it costs nothing, your customers are already there, and you can start selling the same day. The question we hear most is whether a website is still worth it. The honest answer: it depends on what you need the internet to do for you.

What a Facebook page does well

  • Reaching people who already follow you or see your ads.
  • Quick conversations through Messenger.
  • Showing new products, offers and everyday updates.

Where a page falls short

A page lives on someone else's platform. Reach can drop overnight when the algorithm changes, an account can be restricted by mistake, and you cannot decide how your products are organised. Orders sit inside chat threads, so it is easy to lose track of who paid, what was shipped and which customer asked twice.

A page also does little for people searching on Google. When someone types "industrial hose supplier" or "logistics company in Rajshahi", Google mostly shows websites.

Signs you are ready for a website

  • You answer the same questions in Messenger every day: prices, delivery areas, sizes.
  • Corporate or overseas buyers ask for your website before they trust you.
  • You have more products than fit comfortably in posts and albums.
  • You want orders, enquiries and payments recorded in one place.
  • You want to be found by people who have not heard of you yet.

Use both, each with its own job

The strongest setup gives each channel one job. Facebook brings people in; the website is where they read the full details and place an order or send an enquiry. Link the website from your page, add the Meta Pixel to the site so your ads can learn who actually buys, and keep the website as the one place where prices and policies are always correct.

Start small

A first website does not need fifty pages. A clear home page, your products or services, a simple way to contact you and your location on Google Maps cover most of what customers look for. Add an online store or booking later, once you see what people actually use.
